Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) research work in CONTEXT will be in the very front line of the Internet development, and has potential to significantly affect the way the Internet is experienced and used in daily life. Thus research publications and impulses to standardisation are to be expected. These kinds of results are in line with VTT's core mission as a research institute, and the indirect results will be most noteworthy.
CONTEXT will help to form a base understanding for the subsequent commercialisation of the active networking research. In the next phase the SME companies will benefit as customers of VTT, in projects aiming at launching product development. In addition to this, the refined active network platform from CONTEXT can be used in future research to be launched, concentrating on aspects of the platform itself or on novel services utilising the platform.
VTT is in favour of making suitable parts of the project results available to the open source community.
Telefónica I+D joins CONTEXT to extend its knowledge about active service management. TID has a lot of experience with network management systems that will, mostly of them deployed and working in Telefonica group companies. These systems includes functions to retrieve and process a lot of critical information (alarms, counters) from network elements to get the status of the network, to allow a human operator to change network elements behaviour in order to take the network to a right status, etc. This experience will help all along the design and development phases.
CONTEXT will allow exploring a policy based management system and its capabilities to achieve service quality supervision of active networks. The objective is to build a powerful tool that uses human rules at the service level independently of the N and NE levels.
TID also wants to investigate the new context-based services and their characteristics to know the future to come and try to identify new management rules. Active networks and context information capture are also new and exciting investigation areas. The results of the project should add new functionality to current management systems, or build new ones.
Vodafone-Panafon intends to exploit the project results for the purpose of the following
· Customer: Extended/integrated bunch of services to the customers with better performance
The GPRS network provides the customers with the possibility of fast Internet services. Within the project new services not necessarily limited to Internet will be tested. Furthermore, the standard Internet users are expected to be served with better performance.
· Technology: Test of the possibility of using the active network technology in order to improve service delivery in company GSM/GPRS/3G network.
Active networks can be used for improving the efficiency of services delivery through the IP nodes. Vodafone-Panafon has an extensive private network that is used for all telecommunication services including Internet services but up-to-now the active network "principle" is not used in the IP company network. We think that this idea deserves investigation mainly for delivering Internet services to our GPRS customers. The project trials will make clear if the active network and the accompanying innovative project tools and methods, will improve the efficiency of the Internet services delivery to our mobile customers. Moreover, to our knowledge, it is the first time that this network configuration, method and tools are used in order to serve mobile users.
· Business: Feel market reaction, new business models and user perspective
Location based services are already available in many countries while in other are currently under application or enhancement. The next step is the context services that include a broader spectrum of services. These new services will definitely follow a different business model, which is under investigation. Through the project work, the stakeholders of the emerging services as well as the relations between them will be identified. Through the project trials, the user requirements and demands will be revealed. These will be used as a guide for the smooth introduction of the new services to the market, according to the users' reaction that will be received from the trials results.
Algonet S.A. is interested in project results from the viewpoint of a value-added, IP-based service provider. As such, Algonet is mainly interested in the following project results: Modelling of context-aware services and development of associated logic, automated service provisioning, use of an enhanced active network infrastructure to support the needs of value-added services.
Algonet is committed to capitalizing on the experience gained from its involvement in the project and on the collaboration with the other partners of the consortium. Specifically, the exploitation of project results is seen along two main directions, directly connected with the commercial activities of the company, as discussed in the following.
· Enhanced Egreta services:
Egreta is the network launched by Algonet for offering value-added IP-based services. The results of the project, related to the modelling and provisioning of context-aware services will be sought for exploitation to the direction of offering advanced value-based services. Furthermore applicability and benefits of the enhanced active platforms, developed in the project, will be assessed for offering and/or improving Egreta value-added services.
· Applications and products supporting service provisioning:
Algonet develops in-house platforms and applications required for the provisioning of Egreta services and the cost-effective operation of the network. In-house development has been considered of strategic importance to Egreta for reducing time-to-market for new services, for enabling customer/user differentiation through service offerings and for reducing operational costs by automating the service provisioning process. In this context, Algonet currently develops BA$IS, a flexible, modular, workflow-driven platform allowing the handling of telecommunication services according to business objectives, in a uniform and integrated manner. BA$IS covers the whole lifecycle of service provisioning; from service introduction and advertisement to service operation (fulfilment, assurance), accounting/billing and reporting. It provides the necessary means required for ensuring fast introduction/differentiation of new/existing services according to business policies and advances of underlying network technology, while ensuring automated interactions with provisioning systems that may exist in an ISP domain.
CONTEXT work (results, know-how and experience) can directly be exploited by the above activities. Of particular interest are the results regarding the architecture of the whole spectrum of context-aware service management: modelling, development of associated logic and automated provisioning means. Algonet will pursue feedback of the gained know-how and refinement of its foreground to the benefits of the capabilities offered by the BA$IS product family. To increase exploitation potential, Algonet is open to collaborations with other partners in the consortium.
University College London dissemination strategies accord with its main objective, which is to use, research results to advance scientific knowledge. The results of the CONTEXT project will play an important role in both maintaining the expertise of UCL researchers and advancing the knowledge of students and university staff in the crucial technologies: context aware services, active services, IP Quality of Services, Management of IP Services, UMTS. The achievements and results from this project will be disseminated in top journals and international conferences at once fulfilling both the objectives of the European research and UCL's exploitation strategy by enhancing its knowledge base and prestige. UCL is the member of the WWRF and active participant in IFTF. UCL has no direct plans to exploit the results of CONTEXT project commercially. We expect to use the project results in subsequent projects, and thus feed our results indirectly into the commercial activities of other parties. Finally, we work closely with many companies, and receive substantial financial support from them. We expect to exploit the results of the project directly by making us a more attractive partner with such partners. CONTEXT project results exploitation involves consulting services to the telecommunication industry, while in the past, many spin-off companies have originated from EU projects.
Technion as a leading technical University, has as main objective to maintain its top position as a provider of a well-rounded technical education, to allow dissemination of technical knowledge and to continue being a leader in the development of emerging technologies. The participation in the CONTEXT project will contribute toward these goals. It will allow both the faculty and students to interact with colleagues from the European research community. This will allow better courses to students in fields like efficient network management, and active networking. It will also allow the students to be exposed to emerging technologies such as proactive networks, and content-based services.
In addition, results from this project will be disseminated in top journals and international conferences in the field, and in that fulfilling the common objectives of the Technion and the European research. The Technion has no plans to commercially use the results of the CONTEXT project, however the knowledge that will be gained during the project will be used by the Technion and it personnel in future projects and advancing the front of knowledge and technology in the field. The direct role of the Technion in the project is defined in the work-plan. The Technion is planning to contribute its expertise in the field of Active Networking and control over IP networks, in order to define the enhancements needed by Active Network platforms in order to support the fast and flexible deployment of next-generation context-based services. The Technion will also use its research labs to support the development of such a platform and to verify the “proof of the concept” as needed.
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, as a research and non-profit institution, is not pretending to exploit commercially any result of this project. Instead, UPC will contribute and share the know-how with all other partners to be in the forefront of this research field. Then, in this indirect way, UPC will bring also the benefits of this research and development project into the society, fulfilling what it is stated as one of its fundamental foundational objectives.
Institute of Communications and Computer Systems will reinforce its technical background as well as expertise. Since ICCS is associated with the major technological education institution in Greece, its ability to fund and support research has a major influence on the development potential of the relevant technological sectors of the Greek industry. Therefore, ICCS is going to exploit the results of the proposed project in order to further strengthen its ability to pursue research, development and educational activities both for its own benefit and for the benefit of its country and the EU in general.
The need for improving the knowledge level in the specific area covered by CONTEXT is imperative and we consider it as one aspect of the exploitation of results. On the other hand the parallel need for important research achievements building and maintaining the prestige and high status of our organization should not be underestimated as a tool for the accomplishment of the objectives. In a sense the continuation of a successful chain of research achievements and a high educational level for our institution render the successful involvement in prestigious research efforts indispensable.
In addition to this, as a research institution, ICCS has the intention to publish, disseminate or even show the publicly available work of the project in conferences and public events, as it has done for several other projects. Taking all the above into account, the exploitation interest of ICCS focuses in the research dissemination, education and in standardization. ICCS will contribute to bring the theory and technology base into the project and provide the scientific results, which are needed to get creditability and acceptance of the CONTEXT approach in the academic community and standards organisations. On the other hand the achieved knowledge and the results from the CONTEXT research will be exploited in collaboration with the Greek wireless telecommunication operators and software houses.
